Applying for help with Medicare costs in Bexar County

Know who decides, and what to have ready, before you apply.

In short

In San Antonio and Bexar County, Medicare Savings Programs can help pay all or some of Medicare monthly premiums, co-pays and deductibles for people who meet income and resource limits. Texas Health and Human Services decides eligibility. You can apply online at YourTexasBenefits.com or ask 2-1-1 Texas for help. A Bexar Area Agency on Aging counselor at 210-477-3275 can explain the programs first.

A useful next step

  1. Gather the cost you are asking about and any recent notices, kept on your own copy.
  2. Apply through Texas Health and Human Services online at YourTexasBenefits.com, or dial 2-1-1 for help finding an office.
  3. Ask a benefits counselor which documents to send and how to track the application. HHS, not this site, decides eligibility.

A question to keep

Ask which cost-help programs I can apply for and what information is needed.

Questions people in San Antonio ask

What do Medicare Savings Programs pay for?
Texas Health and Human Services says they help pay all or some of Medicare monthly premiums, co-pays and deductibles. There are four programs, QMB, SLMB, QI-1 and QDWI, each with its own income and resource limits. HHS decides which, if any, applies to you.
Is Extra Help the same as a Medicare Savings Program?
No. Extra Help, also called the Low-Income Subsidy, helps with Medicare Part D prescription drug costs. It is a separate program, though a benefits counselor can talk with you about both in one conversation.
Where do I apply for a Medicare Savings Program in San Antonio?
Apply with Texas Health and Human Services online at YourTexasBenefits.com, or ask 2-1-1 Texas for help by dialing 2-1-1 or 877-541-7905. If you want to talk it through first, call the Bexar Area Agency on Aging at 210-477-3275.
