In short
VIAtrans is VIA Metropolitan Transit’s shared-ride, curb-to-curb paratransit service for people who cannot use regular VIA buses because of a disability. You apply first, and a medical professional completes part of the application; VIA notifies you by mail within 21 days. Questions about an application go to VIA Accessible Services at 210-362-2140. VIA, not Medicare, decides eligibility.
A useful next step
- Get the VIAtrans application, in English or Spanish. A friend or family member may help you fill it out.
- Have a medical professional who knows your condition complete their section. VIA may ask you to take part in a functional assessment.
- Once approved, book at least one day ahead online, in the app, or at 210-362-5050, and tell the appointment office you use VIAtrans.
A question to keep
Ask what type of visit is scheduled and whether other services could lead to charges.
Questions people in San Antonio ask
- Where does VIAtrans go?
- VIA says VIAtrans vans operate in the same areas and at the same times as VIA bus service. Trips can be for any purpose, including medical appointments, and are booked at least one day ahead. If your address is outside VIA’s service area, ask the Bexar Area Agency on Aging about rides.
- Can I get home from a doctor’s visit without a set pickup time?
- VIAtrans offers Will Call service, so you do not need an exact return time after a medical appointment or jury duty. When you are ready, call VIAtrans reservations at 210-362-5050 or activate the pickup in the VIAtrans app or website.
- Does Medicare pay for VIAtrans?
- VIAtrans is a VIA transit service with its own fare, $2.00 one way for adults, not a Medicare benefit. Original Medicare generally covers ambulance transportation only when medically necessary. Some Medicare Advantage plans include ride benefits with limits, so ask your plan.
