Costs & paperwork · 3-minute guide

A bill, a notice, or something else?

Start with the title and sender before deciding what to ask.

The short answer

Different documents do different jobs. Read the title, sender, and action instructions. A Medicare Summary Notice (MSN) is not itself a bill.

A useful next step

  1. Identify the document

Look for the exact title and who sent it. Keep the envelope and all pages together.

  2. Look for a requested action

Note any payment request, deadline, or instructions. Do not assume every document needs a payment or that every notice can be ignored.

  3. Ask the sender to explain

Use a verified contact, such as one on your existing member card or the provider’s official website, if you are unsure who sent it.

Words you can use

“Is this a bill I need to address, or a notice explaining a claim or coverage change?”

An everyday example · Fictional

Morgan finds a dollar amount on a notice. Morgan checks the document title and compares it with the provider’s bill before asking about payment.

A question worth keeping

Ask whether this document is a bill, a claim notice, or a coverage-change notice.
