A denial: what to ask next

Find the instructions and deadline, then get help promptly.

The short answer

A denial notice should guide your next steps. Appeal processes vary by coverage and situation. Follow your notice and get individual help; this guide does not calculate your deadline.

A useful next step

  1. Read the instructions now

Find the decision, the reason, the deadline, and how to respond. Keep every page.

  2. Gather information before you appeal

Before you start an appeal, you can ask your provider or supplier for any information to make your appeal stronger. Keep copies together with the notice.

  3. Ask about the right process

Contact the number on your notice or Medicare. Ask whether a correction, appeal, or another process fits the issue.

  4. Explain urgency

If a delay could affect your health or access to necessary care, tell your clinician and the contact handling the decision. Ask whether an expedited process applies.

Words you can use

“What is my next step, what deadline applies, and where can I get help with the response?”

An everyday example · Fictional

Jordan sees a denial and an appeal deadline. Jordan asks for help that day rather than waiting for the annual enrollment period.

A question worth keeping

Ask about the instructions, deadline, and help available for the denial or appeal.
