When you have a Medicare prescription coverage question

Prepare for a conversation with your pharmacist and your Medicare drug plan.

The short answer

This guide is about Medicare drug coverage — Part D, or a Medicare Advantage plan that includes drugs. Your pharmacist and your Medicare drug plan can help explain a prescription coverage problem. Do not use this guide to change or stop a medicine.

A useful next step

  1. Ask what caused the problem

Ask the pharmacist whether the issue concerns the claim, coverage rules, stock, or something else.

  2. Call your Medicare drug plan

Ask which process applies, what information is needed, and how quickly the issue can be reviewed. Keep your prescription details on your own paper.

  3. Get prompt help if access is urgent

Tell the pharmacist and prescribing clinician if you may run out. Ask about appropriate next steps now instead of waiting for enrollment season.

Words you can use

“What is preventing this prescription from being filled under my coverage, and whom should I contact next?”

An everyday example · Fictional

Robin’s pharmacy cannot complete a claim. Robin asks what the message means and which contact can explain the next step. This example does not predict coverage.

A question worth keeping

Ask my pharmacist and my Medicare drug plan how to resolve my prescription coverage question.
